Please please please pick up all garbage on your fields. This should be everybody's responsibility, not just the captains. Before you leave your field after the game make sure nothing is left behind. We need to stay on good terms with Moses Brown and keeping the fields as we found them (i.e. spotless) is imperative. Ok, now on to other business, schedules were being handed out yesterday. I am not going to retype the entire schedule into the computer but be advised that Teams #1, 2, 3, and 4 all have games next Wednesday July 1st, in addition to the regular Monday games. Look for schedules on the bench at practice tomorrow. Last week, I announced a Saturday pickup game at Marvel Gym field on Elmgrove Ave starting at 10:00 AM. Im not sure if anybody showed up last week, but if you did, you noticed a bunch of kids throwing javelins on the field. Let's try it again this Saturday and, if for some reason marvel Gym is being used, go to Hope High. Hopefully, there will be enough interest to make this work. Last night's games all got started late. From now on, because we are playing games to 17 and we have to worry about diminishing sun exposure, all games will start (i.e. teams on the line ready to play) NO LATER THAN 6:15 P.M. So, don't expect to show up at 6:15 and throw around for 20 minutes before playing. Everybody should be there BEFORE 6:00. CAPTAINS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SETTING UP THEIR FIELDS WITH CONES. On to last night's games. Team #1 lead by Dave Toohey a/k/a The Straw Horsemen faced off against Team #8 lead by Dan Cogan a/k/a Cogan's navy. The Straw Horsemen have already had to face some advertisy already as 2 of their top players are not going to be around as expected and co-captain Dan Codiga had to leave the game with a bum shoulder. Short on experienced handlers, the Straw Horsemen fought valiantly but were unable to match the speed and saviness of Cogan's navy which pulled away to win 17-13. Team #2 capatined by yours truly a/k/a Matty's Flock faced off against the Luv Machine lead by Jon LaRossa and Ray Yang. The Flock was particularly impressive on defense contesting almost every throw and score by the Luv Machine. On offense, the Flock received a mid-1st half spark from Flip Williams to get the offense jump-started and utilized the hucking and handling skills of some unknown guy named Fortunat :} to their advantage. Game discs for the Flock go out to Tom "I catch discs like a soccer goalie" Grady who was all over the field both offensively and defensively and Rita Manachi who ran real hard all game. For the Luv Machine, I would be remiss in not pointing out how well their women played particularly Liz Jackson and Jana Z. who made hardly any turnovers despite heavy defensive pressure and Josh Spector who was a suprisingly strong factor on offense. Although the final score was 17-7, the Luv Machine will be a team to be reckoned with. They played well but the speed and athleticism of the Flock was just too much for them to handle on opening day. Over on the next field was a real barn-burner between Team #3 lead by Fred O. faced off against Team #6 lead by Rich "Chia" Lucia and Bob "Vet" Vetromile. The game went back and forth as the teams were evenly matched. I watched the end of the game when Team #6 fought back to tie the game at 16. Next point wins. Team #3 set up a play and hucked it to Tim McBride for the winning score. Kinda of an anti-climatic ending but overall it was apparently a well- played game. I did notice Team #6 being forced to cover Alissa Wise with a guy who will remain nameless (Dr. Winston Lee :}) who still couldn't keep up with those young legs. An interesting strategy. Over at Hope High, Team #4 lead by Dr. Bill Binder and Mike "Mad" Dussault faced off against Team #5 lead by Scott "health insurance anybody ?" Mathieu and Jack "No, Im not the Channel 4 newscaster" Williams. Team #4 lead most of the game although the score was close throughout. The game was capped at 15 with team #4 leading 13-11. Team #5 apparently turned up the defensive pressure and reeled off 4 straight points to take the game going away 15-13. Good 1st week everybody. that's all for now folks. matty
