In past years, we have always done the playoffs during the week but this year we decided we wanted to offer everybody the chance of experiencing a taste of what attending a real weekend ultimate tournament is like. We are going to be at Wheeler Fields in Seekonk, Mass. Directions are at the bottom of this e mail. We will be starting at 10:00 AM SHARP!!!! After much lively debate by the captains, we have decided to have 2 pools of 4 based on the regular season standings. Teams ranked #1, 4, 5, 8 will be in one pool and teams ranked #2, 3, 6, 7 will be in the other pool. Each team will play the other 3 teams in their pool in a game to 13. Each round will be 2 hours long and they will be time-capped. What this means is that about 15 minutes before the end of each round, I will blow a horn which will signify that the game is being capped 2 points over the score of the winning team. So if the score is 10-8, game is to 12. This format allows every team to play 3 meaningful games. The winners of each pool will play in the finals. So 1st round will be from 10-12, 2nd round from 12:15 to 2:15, 3rd round from 2:30 to 4:30 and finals will be from 5:00 to whatever. This means that if we are late getting going, that 1st round will be capped pretty quickly. I have no intention of pushing games back so you should plan to show up around 9:30 AM to warm up and stretch out. Be on time please. At the beginning of the day, we will supply each team with a box of bagels, oranges, and bananas along with water. We will hopefully have a big 5 gallon igloo at each field for water. There are water sprickets all over the place to refill your water supply. Stay hydrated as weather reports indicate that it will be another warm and humid day. We encourage everybody to stay and watch the Finals. There are indoor and outdoor showers which are nice if you want clean up if your team doesnt make finals. So, you might want to bring a change of clothes. After finals are over, we will be having a BBQ. I'm not sure what we are serving (probably the usual burgers, dogs, and veggie burgers) along with side dishes. There will be plenty of food for everybody, including veggies. After we finish eating, we will have an awards ceremony. I ordered trophys for male and female Toby award winners, male and female most improved, and 15 small trophys to the championship winning team. IMPORTANT: WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SERVE BEER AT THE FIELDS. WE WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH EVERYTHING ELSE OTHER THAN BEER. LAST NIGHT's GAMES: GREY 15 Purple 14 - Seth Weitberg's of Grey account of the game: No Mike D. No Winston No Ian No Liz Grey was down 6-2, before taking half 9-8, and then the game 15-14. Bill Brown and Nat Levtow each took maybe a point or two off when we were allowed to go 4-3, and Dave R., Tim M. and me (who played 6 games at a tourney this weekend) played EVERY point of the whole game. On the purple side, Ben Reardon had some hot grabs and D's and Mindy was solid throughout. The key to the game was Grey's zone, which included a man-up on Olivier, which shut purple down. All in all, a highly spirited, well-played game, that was very fun and competitive, without ever losing the great atmosphere we create with a summer league. Royal 17 Green 10 - Royal rebounded from a losing streak with a surprisingly easy victory over Green. Highlights for Royal were a couple of nice grabs by Colin Smith and a huge D in the end zone with a bunch of Green players around her by Mary Huber. Nice job Royal. Black 17 Key Lime 9 - In what I thought would be a really hot game, Black won in a cakewalk. Key Lime was without the services of Captain Parham and Air Traffic Controller Yakota. Black has been on a roll since the addition of Brian Sauro. White 17 Navy 15 - Buoyed by the return of Captain Cogan, White was able to overcome 5-1 and 9-6 deficits to pull this highly competitive game out. For White, kudos to Whitney Kakos who was basically unstoppable scoring at least 5 goals despite tough defense by her Brown teammate Addie. Lydia Misch also played big last night throwing for 2 scores, as did Edric Chiang who made some key scores including a sweet grab in the end zone over Captain Mathieu. For Navy, Flip made some outstanding plays including a sick grab over me where I ended up landing on top of his small smoke-filled body. He simply got up and threw for a score. Standings as of today: 1) Grey 6-2 2) Black 6-3 Key Lime 6-3 4) White 4-4 5) Green 4-5 6) Navy 3-5 7) Royal 3-6 8) Purple 2-6 Wednesday Games White vs. Grey - Moses Brown Lacrosse - Grey needs this win to sew up the regular season title. If they lose, then it will come down to overall point differential with Black and Key Lime. This should be an interesting game.
