From: "Tanja Gronholm" Subject: July 31 - Burgundy vs Orange Date: Fri, 2 Aug 2002 09:35:46 -0400 On a typical sweltering evening at Wheeler, O-Face met Burgundy and did what they do best: they ran. And ran and ran and ran. And then, just when it seemed as if the two teams could fill an ocean with the sweat from their t-shirts, O-Face ran a little harder. Both teams were low on numbers, and both of Burgundy's captains were out with injuries. This game was plagued by turnovers on both sides caused by hurried throws and great D by both teams, but it seemed as though the legs of O-Face were oddly invigorated by the 37,674:1 water to air ratio. The first half, overflowing with exciting goal line turnovers and hot endzone defense, belonged to O-Face and their interminable running. Burgundy continually broke the O-Face mark and worked the disc up the field to the goal line, but were beleaguered by incomplete throws and tenacious O-Face authori-D on the goal line. Cory Byrum started the O-Face run with a "typical" Cory layout-D to prevent Burgundy from making the first goal of the game. That seemed to whet O-Face's appetite, and their hunger for the disc fed their seemingly robotic legs. O-Face scores the first point, and in the next point Eric McAndrews decided that running wasn't enough and flew up to get a mosquito's-eye view and make the D to prevent another Burgundy goal and bring the score to 2-0. After an O-Face run that ended with a hand block by Cory and another Scott Wiant-Cory connection to bring the score to 7-0, Burgundy decided they had had enough. They quickly rebutted with a ¾ field huck to Blake and brought the score to 7-1. O-Face, not to be outdone, replied with another quick score. Touché, retorted Burgundy, and they sped down the field to bring the score to 8-2. An unfathomed O-Face took half. Burgundy came out strong after the half with another long throw to bring the score to 9-3. The next few points, reminiscent of the first half, were brimming with turnovers and a plethora of ferocious d's. O-Face brought the score to 15-3, ending their run by producing a picturesque palindrome of a play: Bill to Marian to Sarah to Marian to Bill for the score. Burgundy let O-Face know they weren't going down without a fight as Jeff Hollister pulled down some plastic by "using his considerable rump to butt check Cory" (quote credit goes to Mike Bradley) to bring the score to 15-4. O-Face replied with a quick score and it's game point O-Face. Pranay of Burgundy breaks hard for the endzone to catch a long huck and has time to sit and contemplate the meaning of life while he waits for both teams to catch up. Burgundy calls a time out on the goal line and O-Face sets up a zoney defense in the endzone. Burgundy makes the throw and Marian decides that she'd like that throw better if she were smacking it to the ground. O-Face gets the d and Bill breaks for the endzone. He and two Burgundy defenders jump up for the huck from Scott, but Bill shoots up between them like a hotdog out of a bun to catch the disc and win the game. Final score, 17-4 O-Face.
