Quarterfinals took place last night.

Over at hope High, Purple (#2) took on Straw (#1) in a repeat of last Monday's
game in which Straw gave a scare to Purple before succumbing. Unfortunately
for Straw, their illustrious leader Dave Toohey was unable to play because of
a bad back. Purple had their full contingent of players last night and were
able to easily defeat Straw 17-8.

On the lacrosse field, White, the #5 seed took on Blue the #4 seed. Blue had
defeated White during the season but that was without Captain Cogan and before
the Santa Cruz ringers joined the team. Despite a valiant effort by Blue,
White had too many weapons at their disposal and defeated Blue by about 4 or 5
points.

On the soccer field, Grey the #3 seed took on Black the #6 seed in a repeat of
last Wednesday's game. That game was pretty ugly and from what I saw of last
night's action, this game was not much different. Lots of defense and plenty
of turnovers by both sides. Black scored to make the game 12-11. It started
getting dark making it difficult to see the disc. Grey was able to pull out a
14-11 victory.

Over on the baseball field, Green the #7 seed took on Red the #2 seed. Red
was short on players because of injuries and Green for most of the game was
able to take advantage. Green jumped out to an 8-3 lead when red decided to
pump up their defense. Green was still winning 11-9. Red went on a run
though and won the game going away 14-11 I think.

This Wednesday will be the semifinals.

Purple v. White (soccer field)
Red v. Gray (baseball diamond)

By having both games next to each other, spectators can watch both games at
the same time. Both games should be hotly contested.

ALSO, GAMES MUST START BY 6:30 PM. Purple's game last night started right at
6:30 and we were done by 8:00. The other games did not start until much later
and had to capped because of darkness. Players, please come a bit earlier so
we can get going. Playing in the dark is not my idea of fun.

There will be pickup on wednesday for those people whose team was eliminated.

This Monday August 3rd will be the Finals. After the game, we will be mosying
over to Ben and Pranay's house for a BIG party. They live literally around
the corner from the fields on Brook Street across from Pembroke Field. We
will have refreshments (including beer for those 21 +) as well as a barbecue
for everybody. We will also have our awards cermony which nicely segues into
my nice topic....

AWARDS: I have asked Captains for nominations for the following categories
but given the lack of response, I wanted to open it up to the general public.

Please e mail me your nominations for the following:

MVP/TOBY - This award will be presented to the top male and female player who
has best exemplified what we as a league are striving for, namely, top-caliber
play, ability to help their teammates, and good spirit.

MOST IMPROVED/BEST NEWCOMER - This award will also be given to both a male and
a female. This category encompasses new players who have been particularly
impressive and those players who werent so good but have really improved alot
over the summer.

TEAM SPIRIT AWARD - This award goes to the team who had the best spirit this
summer. Please name only 1 team and a reason why you are picking them.

that's all folks,

mjb
