It's 6:15 PM on Monday August 3rd. The crowd is beginning to show up for
RIPUL's 3rd Summer League Championship.

The Red team is busy huddling together to discuss strategy on the chalkboard.
In contrast, the Purple team is just hanging out, not overly concerned
seemingly with the game. Flip Williams best exemplifies Purple's laid-back
approach as he shows up late, as usual, with a cigarette in his left hand and
a cup of java in his right hand.

Purple received the disc first and executed flawlessly in punching in the 1st
score. Flip predicted this to be a bad omen as Purple has been a notoriously
slow starter. Purple was able to score the next goal also.

As expected though, Red fought back, as they did throughout this game. The
score went back and forth and I believe Purple had either a 6-4 or 7-4 lead
when red made a run and tied the game at 8-8. Purple took the half though at
9-8.

The 1st half was full of some very exciting action by both teams. There was
excellent offensive flow by both teams, hard-core man to man defense by both
sides, and some super exciting hucks and layouts. Fortunat, in particular,
seemed to control the air traffic coming down with numerous defenses. Tom
grady also made a couple of highlight-reel catches. For Red, their offense
involved around Pranay "Projo" Parikh, Captain Fred, and Bob "young at heart
and mind" Yakota hucking to their women June Park and Carolyn Grimes.

(As a side note, I just wanted to point out that the reason Fortunat is able
to come down with so many contested discs in the air is because he figures out
where the disc is going to land and then gets a running start in order to get
up higher in contrast to what most people do which is to simply figure out
where the disc is going to go and then jump off 2 feet).

Like the 1st half, Purple started off strong and jumped out to an 11-8 lead.
Undaunted, red turned up the defensive pressure once again and score 2 goals
to make it 11-10. Purple matched the Red run and took a 13-10 lead. The next
point Purple had 2 good opportunities to jump out to a 4 point lead but blew
scoring opportunities near the Red goalline. Red was able to score the next 4
goals and took their 1st lead of the game at 14-13.

The crowd was clearly rooting for Red (everybody loves underdogs I guess) and
the crowd was getting into it. Purple was able to tie the game at 14 but red
scored the next goal to make it 15-14. Purple once again tied the score at 15
but Red was able to score to make it 16-15, hard cap at 17.

Purple was in an unusual position. We had not had a single really close game
at the end. Purrple received the disc and worked it down the field but turned
it over. Red returned the favor though. Adam Turner of Purple threw a
forehand flick to Fortunat in the end zone. Scott Martin had close coverage
and both misread the disc. Fortunat went up for the disc but it went over his
head. He quickly adjusted and as the disc was just about to hit the ground he
made an unbelievable lay out grab to tie the score at 16. Next point wins.

Fortunat pulled the disc and, as he did so many times throughout the game, he
was able to pull the disc deep into the Red end zone. Pranay went back to
catch the disc and it appeared as if he dropped the pull. That was not the
case though. Red was able to complete a couple of throws to work it out of
their end zone. A throw went up the right sideline and Fortunat poached off
his person to make the defense. Nobody was open for Purple on the turn so
timeout was called. Very smart play.

Purple completed like 3 passes and the disc was in Flip's hands about 10 yards
from the end zone. Fortunat ran straight by Flip on his left (the short side
of the field) and Flip threw Fortunat a scoober throw (an upside down
forehand) for the win.

This was IMHO by far the most competitive, intense, well-executed, and good-
spirited game RIPUL has ever had. Both teams played really hard. For my
team, I can definitely say that every single person on our team stepped it up
a notch last night and played better than they have all summer. Red also
played great but from where I stood Fortunat was the difference in the game.
He scored or threw for at least half of our scores, if not more, and he was
all over the field on defense.

There was some great individual matchups as well especially between Pranay and
Tom Grady. Both are great athletes but Pranay has more experience and was
able to do just enough to get open despite numerous attempted layout blocks by
Tom.

It's too bad we didn't videotape the game because it would be certainly worth
watching again.

The party was alot of fun. Toohey barbecued burgers, hot dogs, and veggie
burgers and there was enough food for everybody.

After dinner, we had the awards ceremony and the winners were as follows:

MVP/TOBY (male) - Fortunat Mueller (Purple)
MVP/TOBY (female) - Lori Parham (Straw)
Best Newcomer/Most Improved (male) - Raju Goyal (Grey)
Best Newcomer/Most improved (female) - Jana Z. (Black)
Most Spirit - Blue Team

On behalf of RIPUL, I want to thank everybody for participating. This was a
great season overall as the level of play really stepped it up. Hopefully, we
can build on our momentum and make next year even better.

On that note, if anybody has any suggestions/improvements, send them along.
Also, if you want to help organize, let me know. We could use the help.

BTW, the PJB had a big article on us in yesterday's Providence Metro section.
There were lots of pictures and a decent article. For those who havent seen
it, the article can be read either on our web site or PJB's.

For those who want to continue playing, we will have pickup at Hope High every
Monday and Wednesday at 6:00 PM until further notice beginning TOMORROW.

Also, if you want to play competetively with a club team this fall, let me
know.

that's all folks. thanks for a great season.
