The captains all met last night at Oliver's to conduct the RIPUL 1999 Draft.
Before getting started, we made a toast to having another great season of
playing some hot ultimate. Cheers!!!

SPIRIT OF THE GAME:

First order of business was a discussion on emphasizing Spirit of the
Game ("SOTG"). For those unfamilar with the concept, SOTG has different
meanings to people but, to me, it means treating everybody, including
opponents, with respect and dignity. Since there are no referees in our
sport and we make our own calls on an honor system, SOTG dictates that nobody
tries to intentionally cheat or intentionally tries to hurt somebody else.
Competition is encouraged but not at the expense of others.

As a league, we have people ages 16-45, with differing levels of
experience. We want everybody to feel included as part of a team that over
the next 6 weeks will grow together. That means, for instance, if you are an
experienced player, you don't look off a wide-open cut because you might
think that person is not that strong a player. That means that if an
inexperienced player doesn't understand the rules, you take the time to
calmly explain it to them. That means that you don't yell at your teamates
because you think they messed up.
Responsibility, maturity, and respect are the buzzwords of the day.

GAME RULES: Like last year, games are going to be to 17. In order to
complete games, we all agreed that games are going to start at 6:00 P.M.
SHARP!!! No ultimate time. This means that people should be showing up at
5:30 P.M. to stretch and throw. We are playing with 1 timeout per half and a
floater. UPA pull rules are in effect.

FIELDS: We have decided for a number of reasons not to use the Wheeler
fields in Seekonk for weekday league games. ALL LEAGUE GAMES WILL EITHER BE
AT MOSES BROWN OR ACROSS THE STREET AT THE BROWN ATHLETIC COMPLEX. We will
still have our playoffs out in Seekonk on Saturday July 31st.

SOCIALIZING: In order to encourage both team and league camaraderie, we want
to encourage everybody to show up at Oliver's after Monday and Wednesday
games. This is a great way for all of us to get to know each other better
off the field. Oliver's is located on Brook Street right down the street
from the fields.
