KIWI v. FOREST - Single Soccer Field
WHITE v. PURPLE - Soccer Field next to Road
DENIM v. ORANGE - Soccer Field next to Woods
BLACK v. BURGUNDY - Baseball Diamond

RESULTS - MONDAY JULY 1

Purple 17 Black 13

Unfortunately for the winless Black, Purple showed up with all their big guns
and, despite a strong effort, was unable to contain Cutter's long throws to
assorted receivers and was unable to play an effective zone D because Purple
has so many capable handlers.

White 17, Burgundy 9
(Brian from White)

White brought a very small squad on the hottest day of the year. Kit and
Justin looked very nice in street clothes as they cheered from the sidelines.
Aparently, White's game against Orange last week, which I missed, was an
injury fest. Most came from one play where Scott Wiant of Orange was chasing
a hospital pass and knocked down scores of White players like bowling pins
(this is almost completely made-up, but I'm going with it anyway).

Burgundy capitalized on the turnovers its zone produced in the first few
points with smooth handling from Emily Bubbers, Will Arnold, and Jeff. Sorry
I don't know which Jeff (Burgundy has two), but I will go on record as saying
that RIPUL has too darn many Jeffs! I don't have a problem with any
particular Jeff (or Emily-- Burgundy has two of those too), but seriously how
many do you need?

White is used to a height advantage, but was missing several players and
Burgundy is also a tall team, so Burgundy actually had the advantage in this
game. Nevertheless, White decided to use an agressive fronting D to save
their legs, hoping they'd either get the block or the point would end quickly
with a score. White also countered Burgundy's measured attack with a series
of 4 or 5 beautiful long strikes from Jeff Fleischaker to Adele, Kira, and
Cletus (Dave B.) getting open long. He followed that up with about 5
throwaways in one point, but no matter, the damage was done and the deep game
opened up the field for White.

Except for the hell point just before half, this was a well-played game on
both sides. Burgundy just doesn't drop anything-- they have a number of
women, Brown players, I'm told (don't know names, I'll just play the odds and
call them all Emily), who just hauled everything in. However the White D was
as stifiling as the humidity and despite a talented handling core which also
included Pranay, Burgundy was was forced into difficult throws by White's
man-to man and had trouble gaining yardage against its zone.

Player of the game award for White goes to Brian Nicholas for holding his own
D-ing up the more experienced Will Arnold. Burgundy's player of the game
would have to be Emily Bubbers who was completely chill and moved the disc no
matter how often the Z trapped Burgundy on the sideline.

WEDNESDAY JULY 3

Denim 17 Black 15

Denim only had 8 players but they had all their best players: Scott, Bob
Yakota, (who claims his summer league team has never lost a game he has
attended - this is not verified), Lucky, and Heidi. Black was desperate for
a win and had plenty of subs. Denim lead 11-8 when Black put together a run
tying the game at 12. The teams traded back and forth but Denim's chilly O
was too much.

White 17, Kiwi 10?11? Loring-- do you have the score?
(by Brian from White)

This was the deja vu game: Again White had low numbers (I played the whole
game despite a cooler full of tasty beverages calling to me on the sideline).
Again we got off to a shaky start (Kiwi took the early lead). Again White
had two injured players on the sideline (this time Andre & Bobbers). But
once again White put on a strong run to take a big halftime lead on another
muggy scorcher of a day.

Kiwi is not afraid to play a non-traditional game. They came out early with
a spread offense, isolating Scott Martin one-on-one. Despite the iso being
shut down, the three handlers back managed to dump-swing well initially,
though White stopped that fairly quickly. Kiwi had more success running out
of a stack and they were able to switch from the spread to the stack offense
confidently. The game was played on a very short field which put a damper on
White's long game. Several passes, as well as most of the early pulls, went
out the back.

This was not a hucking game for White due to slippery hands, the extremely
short field, and Kiwi's style of defense. Kiwi also plays an unusual D.
They often mark straight up and have the dump's defender poach the lane. I'm
not sure why they don't force one direction to make the poacher more
effective. White's handlers would throw leading passes toward the sidelines
away from the poach or throw to the dump who would quickly get it out.

3 highlights: Scott Martin's layout grab in the end zone of a breakmark
backhand up the line from Brian Sheehan.

A sick collision between Deepak Ramani (Kiwi) and Aaron Seider (White) as
Aaron went airborne to bid on a disc up for grabs that Deepak was also
determined to get. Fortunately Deepak only got the wind knocked out of him,
but the noise was like something you hear in NFL Films.

A Silliest by Dave Buckingham of White on a full field throw by Jeff
Fleischaker. A silliest can happen when a long pass crosses the perimeter
line and isn't coming back in bounds. If it lands out, it is put back into
play where it last crossed the line. The 10th Edition changed the rules so
that if an offensive player jumps from in bounds and touches the disc, even
if he make no attempt to "greatest" it back in, it is put into play near
where he touched it. So Cletus didn't maintain possession but made the
difference between Kiwi getting the disc on their goal line or ours (only
about 50 yards on this field) with this extra silly-looking play.

Colin (darn, two of those on this team) had some nice grabs for Kiwi and the
defensive battle between him and Loring Holden was fun to watch-- Loring came
up with a couple big d-blocks. Eric Weiss of White was solid despite painful
back spasms and Kira Lawrence bailed out several of of our poor throws as
always. Kiwi had some others who played well, but I can't remember names.
This one guy I suspect is a robot, his foot realignment procedure after an
ankle twist was something out of Terminator. Human feet don't do that. Kiwi
seems to have some options off their spread/iso offense and they will be
tough when they really get it down. Their robotic feet will also be a big
advantage, except when it rains.

Kiwi's player of the game award goes to Kali Cheung who caught numerous goals
while toeing the lines despite being matched up against White's top women
including Kira Lawrence. Player of the game Julie Stein really stepped up
for White with some very precise handling in the second half when everyone
else was getting sloppy-- always getting open and advancing the disc with
pretty throws.
